“The aim is to prevent problems to local and foreign tourists, ensuring their safety and protecting natural beauty of the environment.”

The police deployed more officers and kept the anti-riot squad and tear gas on standby ready for any confrontations with the residents or owners of the demolished properties.

Coast conservation and coastal resource said that the unauthorized structures were in the Matara—Mirissa coastal tourist zone.

Destruction followed orders by President Maithripala Sirisena in the wake of harassment and assault of female Dutch tourists on April 8. A number of local ‘beach boys’ were arrested and charged.
